PROJECT: XP8000E Portable Generator

Generac Power Systems has offered a heavy-duty contractor-grade portable generator for many years.  Leveraging this experience, they wished to enter the residential market with a line of new portables at various power ratings.  A requirement was to incorporate a visual brand language that was consistent with their new and successful home standby generator family, an effort previously supported by Priority Designs.

We supported Generac’s research initiatives with a conceptual portable generator prototype.  Insights gained from consumer feedback helped our collective team target specific benefits for the end user.  A revised design included all controls being recessed and located on the side of the unit for convenience, and to prevent damage during transport.  Multiple grab handles were placed low on both ends to aid users in lifting and loading the portable into a vehicle for transport.  The fuel fill location was positioned away from the exhaust to reduce the risk of accidental combustion, yet close enough to the edge for easy filling.

The new features for users and distinctive visual brand language have helped Generac gain significant market share since the launch of the new portables line.  Robust construction and protective details contribute to a product with a dependable life cycle.
